Baoyu spends his recuperation period playing
idly in the garden. Xifeng rearranges Aroma’s pay, but Lady Wang rejects making
her Baoyu’s chamber wife. The girls drop in to congratulate Aroma; Baoyu talks
of death. Baoyu wearies of the garden, and watches Jia Qiang give Charmante a bird, which he then frees.
